BMW 4 Series Used Buying Guide

• Despite our current 4 Series inventory being “older”, it is still faster than the newer generation.
• If you want the fastest option that we have, look for the 435i.
• If you’re wanting something that can get passengers in easier, then a Grand Coupe is what you need.
• The best year for a 4 Series is 2015, this is because there’s more options to pick from as they haven't been phased out yet during initial production.

When the 4 Series came out, drivers were treated to either Coupe, Convertible, or Gran Coupe models. It came in a ton of distinct models, with the three that we have at the time of writing being the 2015, and 2016 428i, and the 2015 435i.

When the Coupe version of the 4 series debuted, it came in 3 models, with the rest of the lineup coming in a short time after. Both diesel and gas versions are available, with most models came an all-wheel-drive, or as BMW calls it “xDrive”.

A few months later, in the start of 2014, the Convertible was launched. This came with 3 models at launch. While xDrive was available for this mode, it took a few months for it to be offered.

The last build to round off the line was the Gran Coupe. Production started in July of 2014, and despite having more doors, it offered less rear headroom, and the same cargo volume as the Coupe. Thanks to the extra equipment, this build is also heavier, and if speed is your thing, you know every pound counts.

All of the models could be equipped with a heads-up display, 8-speed automatic transmission, and LED headlights. If you want the most performance, then you can look for the BMW M Performance Parts. This included upgrades to the exhaust, power, bodykit, limited slip differential, steering wheel, and interior trims.

Diving into the specific models that we had, there were the two 428i models. Both were part of the first generation, one was a coupe, and the other a gran coupe with xDrive. These models come equipped with a 2.0L turbo I4, producing 241 horsepower. The Gran Coupe version of this model has an EPA rating of 27 MPG combined. With the Coupe had the same EPA rating.

The 435i we have is a Gran Coupe equipped with xDrive. Being a 2015 model, this came equipped with a 3.0L turbo I6. Making 302 horsepower. This engine, being larger, had slightly less fuel economy, having an EPA rating of 25 MPG combined.

While fuel consumption was decent, when people think of BMW, they think of performance. Starting with the “slower” 428i, this model can go 0-60 in 5.5 seconds, with a top speed of 156 mph. When on the track ready to do a quarter mile, you can get it done in 14.2 seconds.

Now onto the faster 435i. This model can go 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, hitting top speeds of 127 mph. Being that this engine is more powerful, it is limited by a governor to have a lower top speed. This model can do a quarter mile at the track in 13.1 seconds.

When 2016 came around, the 435i, 430i, and 428i models were replaced by the 440i. While a new diesel model was also introduced, this being the 425d.

2017 saw a few changes, mainly being new cosmetic features, with another being a stiffer suspension on coupe, and Gran Coupe models.
